The last few weeks have presented extremely challenging water quality conditions for large parts of NSW due to the unprecedented combination of drought, bushfires and flooding. These impacts are likely to continue to impact water quality in catchments for a number of years.

With many Council areas in NSW affected by bushfires and 2019 being Australia's hottest and driest on record, unfortunately local water utilities in NSW cannot afford to rest. Rainfall is likely to result in increased contaminants in catchment runoff which will present challenges to the treatment of drinking water.

The Sam Samra annual Award has been established as a memorial and acknowledgement of the late Sam Samra’s long term contribution, passion and dedication to the water industry. Sam was a great ally of local water utilities in NSW which benefitted from his commitment over a 50 year period.
