Hi All,
We've had a request from a third party to paint artwork on one of our reservoirs. I was wondering if any other Council's have either accepted or denied third party artworks and the reasoning behind your decision? If accepted, what policies and procedures have you put in place to manage the process and protect Council and it's infrastructure?
Thanks in advance

Fourteen years ago I worked at Ballina Shire Council and an artwork on one of our concrete reservoirs near Lennox Head had been commissioned by Council a short time before I commenced employment there. One issue I remember was that the laitance from the concrete spoiled the artwork over time. (Not of concern for a steel reservoir). Another concern was possible vandalism of the artwork. In the end, a sacrificial layer of paint was painted over the artwork. This paint was designed so that it could be washed off, if necessary, without affecting the paint of the artwork below. I am not sure of the reasoning for commissioning the artwork, though it was quite attractive. Given its location to the coast, the artwork had a theme based on the sea and related animals. I am not sure if it is still there.

Hi all, a few water reservoirs have recently incorporated artwork, including at Gunnedah, Lockhart, Narrandera, with a few examples in Queensland as well. A good story on this topic: https://www.standard.net.au/story/6204813/water-tower-art-trending-in-nsw/ If a few of those Councils get in touch with us (info@waterdirectorate.asn.au) we could pull together a fact sheet or case study.
