Digital Readiness and Maturity

Local Water Utilities (LWUs) across regional NSW are under increasing pressure to improve water security, reduce water loss and maintain reliable services, often with limited resources and workforce capacity.

We're helping utilities build their digital readiness and progress through three stages of digital maturity:

  • Foundation: Establish reliable data and improve operational visibility.

  • Integration: Embed digital tools into day-to-day operations and asset management.

  • Optimisation: Use data-driven insights to improve performance, manage risk and support better decision-making.

Through practical case studies, shared learning and a structured Digital Water Roadmap, we're helping utilities identify priorities, build capability and take achievable next steps towards more resilient and future-ready water services.

Success Stories: From Insights to Action

The digital monitoring tools helped us detect leaks we never knew existed. We've reduced water loss by 18% and our operators now have real visibility across the entire network.

Operations Supervisor, Dubbo Regional Council
The Roadmap's step-by-step approach made digital adoption practical for our team. We started with basic monitoring and built confidence before scaling up to predictive analytics.

General Manager, Leeton Shire Council
Regional collaboration through the water loss hub gave us access to tools and expertise we couldn't afford alone. Digital solutions are now helping multiple councils improve service reliability.

Practical digital uplift

Our Roadmap consists of three stages. LWUs can move through them at their own pace. Benefits are delivered at every stage i.e. you don’t need to “finish” to see value.

The time is now.

The Directorate is committed to supporting LWUs in regional areas on their digital journey to improve water security, reduce water loss and keep services reliable.
