Better water and sewerage in Aboriginal communities
21 July 2008
The State Government recently completed a statewide audit of 61 discrete Aboriginal communities by DoC to determine the O&M and capital upgrade costs of water and sewerage systems for these communities.
In May it was announced that the State Government had signed off on a multi million dollar long term commitment of about $205 million over the next 25 years to deliver better water and sewerage services in the State's Aboriginal communities.
The program will be managed by DWE with the assistance of a steering committee chaired by the DAA and it is expected there will be significant involvement of local water utilities.
In June the Water Directorate was invited to nominate a representative to be on the DAA chaired steering committee which will meet for the first time on 9 July. Wayne Franklin, Rous County Council, has volunteered to attend these meetings on our behalf. We will keep you posted on the progress of the steering committee.
