Last night the winner of the 2009 Innovation in Water Supply and Wastewater was announced at the IPWEA's Excellence Awards Dinner. The winner of this award is Clarence Valley Council and Coffs Harbour City Council for their joint project, Regional Water Supply, Shannon Creek Dam.
The aim of this project was to ensure adequate water supplies to both the Coffs Harbour City Council and the Clarence Valley Council communities through to the year 2046 and further if possible.
The project involved the enhancement of Shannon Creek Dam, including building a 90km water supply pipe and many ancillary projects such as pump stations. Building the dam involved raising the dam crest another 9.6m and thus increasing the storage from 30,000 ML to 70,000ML.
The project also focussed on promoting better demand management practices and water conservation strategies to ensure that the longevity of the infrastructure was increased despite the forecast population growth in this region.
The highly commended award was received by Port Macquarie Hastings Council for the Wauchope Water Treatement Plant. This project was a very worthy runner up. The Water Directorate would like to thank all our members that nominated as well as the winners mentioned above.
The Excellence Awards Dinner was sponsored by Downer EDI and were a very well attended and successful evening. Congratulations to all the organisers and everyone involved in the presentation.
