The 2009 LGSA Water Management Conference will be held in Deniliquin and will provide a focus on sustainably managing urban water and water for irrigation and the impacts of water policy on regional/rural economies.
Deniliquin is the support centre for and headquarters of the largest private irrigation area in Australia, Murray Irrigation Ltd, and the conference site visits will showcase important irrigation infrastructure. One of the keynote addresses will investigate the future of irrigation in times of reduced water availability.
Deniliquin is also a great place to discuss outcomes of the Australian Government's approach to the integrated management of the Murray-Darling Basin, including addressing the issue of over-allocation of water and the impacts of water buybacks for the environment on local economies and communities. Federal Minister Penny Wong has been invited to attend the conference and provide a presentation on these issues as part of her portfolio as Minister for Climate Change and Water.
Other pertinent topics to be discussed include the implementation of the LWU water reform process in NSW, sustainable water loss management and climate change and water availability issues.
