The annual IPWEA Engineering Awards
were held recently at the Sydney SuperDome. The Water
Directorate is the sponsor of the Innnovation in Water and
Wastewater Category.
This
year, the winner of the Award was Wagga
Wagga City Council
for the Installation of Pressure
Sewerage Systems in part of East Wagga project.
Prior to the commencement of this project, no substantial
contract had been awarded for the installation of pressure
sewerage systems in NSW. A section of East Wagga Wagga
has been identified for the installation of this alternative
sewerage system and work has begun on the installation of
reticulation mains. Ultimately all residents in the
area will own an onsite wastewater treatment system.
The
judges considered this winning project to be both innovative
and inspirational as a number of other councils around NSW
are now considering the installation of pressure sewerage
pipes.
The
highly commended Award went to Armidale Dumaresq Council for
the Sustainable Effluent and Biosolds
Reuse in Armidale project. A great deal of research
and development went into this project and the judges were
impressed with the clear environmental improvements this approach
is able to demonstrate. Its application in flat country
areas is obvious because the system does not rely on gravity
feed and the cost of installation is comparable with conventional
systems.
Congratulations
to both the winners and to all seven nominees for this Award.
The Water Directorate strongly encourages member councils
to nominate projects and raise the profile of the water industry
in NSW.
