Funding Restored
for Drinking Water Monitoring Program
10
June 2005
Recently the Water Directorate advised
members that from July 2005 funding for the testing of drinking
water samples was to be removed the the NSW Department of
Health. This would have meant that NSW councils would
have had to find a total of $500,000 to pay for the full cost
of monitoring drinking water samples.
The
Water Directorate resolved to work with the LGSA to have the
funding for this critical program reinstated.
In
a welcome move, the Minister of Health, the Hon. Morris Iemma,
recently wrote to the LGSA advising that funding for this
program is to be reinstated.
This
means that water utilities can continue to submit their allocated
number of samples to the DAL, the Greater South Laboratory
and the Northern Rivers Laboratory.
For
more information, councils should contact their local Public
Health Unit.
