Overview
of the 2004 Australian Drinking Water Guidelines
23
February 2006
In
2004, the NHMRC published an updated version of the Australian
Drinking Water Guidelines with a number of changes, particularly
in the framework for managing drinking water quality.
To
assist our member councils the Water Directorate Executive
Committee has prepared an Overview of the latest Guidelines.
The objectives of this Overview are to:
Provide a concise summary of the 2004 ADWG that can be easily
understood by water supply authorities and allow them to
quickly ascertain their level of compliance with the guidelines.
Assist water supply authorities with due diligence assessments.
Provide a comparison with the 1996 Guidelines for Drinking
Water Quality of Australia.
This
overview document provides a summary of the salient issues
in the 2004 ADWG: it does not attempt to offer a definitive
review of the entire document. The 2004 ADWG and other supporting
documents can be found on the NHMRC website at: http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/publications/synopses/eh19syn.htm
The
Water Directorate’s Water Subcommittee supervised the preparation
of this summary document and provided comments on the draft.
